We like to think that more time equals better decisions. But what if more time just equals more doubt?
The other day, I was talking to friends about something I was stuck on. I asked for advice, expecting a back-and-forth discussion. Instead, one of them hit me with a lyric from Big Sean:
"Five-second rule (Five) / That's how much time every decision get."
Then they gave me a challenge: You have five minutes to make this decision.
At the same time, another friend has been pushing me to stop wasting so much time on decisions, reminding me that speed matters. Not because everything needs to be rushed, but because indecision keeps me from making progress. The longer I delay, the further I push my own goals.
So I made the call. And guess what? The world didn’t crumble. In fact, I felt lighter:
Because momentum doesn’t come from waiting. It comes from deciding.
Speed matters. Not because you need to rush, but because indecision is a silent goal-killer. When you delay making a choice, you’re not just postponing an outcome, you’re postponing progress.
Here’s the truth: Most of the time, we already know what we want to do. We’re just afraid to commit. But clarity comes from action, not overthinking.
The next time you find yourself stuck in decision mode, try this:
Set a five-minute timer.
Make a call based on the information you already have.
Move forward and adjust as needed.
The longer you wait, the further your goals get. Trust yourself.
What’s one decision you’ve been overthinking? Try the five-minute rule and let me know how it goes.
Making decisions faster means spending less time stuck and more time soaking up what’s actually useful. Here’s what I’ve been loving, learning, and letting go of this week.
Things I’m Loving
NFL Super Bowl LIX Mic'd Up: I’m usually more into college football, but this game (and watching the mic’d-up recap) was next level. I could feel the intensity, strategy, and teamwork that secured the Eagles' win.
Lo-fi music for focus: I’ve been using lo-fi beats while working, and it’s been a game-changer for staying locked in without distractions.
Things I’m Learning
How top leaders make decisions fast: “Speed doesn’t mean sacrificing a thoughtful and deliberate approach.”
How constraints fuel creativity in content production: Having endless options can be overwhelming, so setting limits can make creating easier and more effective.
Things I’m Letting Go
Overthinking small choices. Every decision doesn’t need a deep dive.
Waiting until I “feel ready.” Action creates confidence, not the other way around.
I needed this- I am also guilty of taking a bit to make decisions sometimes and the five minute rule is golden! Thank you for sharing!
