Know Thy Customer: Understanding Your Target Audience
Let’s take a minute to define and refine your ideal customer.
If you are a creator, builder, or service provider, there’s one thing you all have in common: a specific target audience for your brand or business.
A target audience is the group of people you’re trying to reach and/or market to. They can share common characteristics, behaviors, or interests that align with what you are providing.
Defining your target audience is the key to creating effective marketing strategies. Once you know your target audience, you can create content and messaging that resonates with them, which in return can create a loyal community or customer base.
However, before we dive in on the steps to get there. I have to first s/o Dee The Creative for my All That Is Kim and K.I.M brand refresh! We’ve worked together for years now and he always understands the vision. Check out this dope creative on IG and his work.
Now let’s get into it!
Here are a few steps you can take to start defining your target audience:
Start with research
Research peers or leaders in your industry and focus on the people that follow or buy from them. Where does their audience live? What type of lifestyle do they have? What are they interested in? These factors can help you understand the type of demographic you want to target.
Analyze your existing customers or community
Take a look at your current followers or customers to understand who they are and what they have in common. Once you identify these characteristics and see where they align, you can create customer personas that represent your ideal target audience.
Determine Pain Points
Now that you have done some research and analyzed your existing customer base, it’s time to outline what problems they face and how your brand and/or business can address them. You can do this by reaching out to a few of your existing customers 1:1 and asking open-ended that focus on their challenges and needs. Another way is to monitor conversations on social. Search a hashtag related to a pain point and see what people are saying in the comments or making posts about, keeping your ear to the ‘digital’ streets.
Review your analytics
Check the analytics on your website or social media to understand your audience’s behavior and interests. There are even third-party tools or features directly in the platform you can use to review detailed reports.
Remember, even after you identify your target audience, continue to refine it as you gather more information and data. It’s important to adjust your marketing strategies based on the insights you discover to meet their needs.

Fun Fact: I’ve had this idea for a while now, reserving the domain name and getting Dee to create the brand identity back in 2019. However, I wasn’t ready to share it with the world yet. Maybe it’s because I wanted more experience or I knew I didn’t have the time to give it the attention it needed. Either way, there’s beauty in trusting your season and the timing of your life. After almost a decade of translating business requirements into strategic marketing executions, I’m excited to work with brands and startups with this new venture.
I’ll most likely do a bigger “announcement” in the fall when I’m taking more clients, but I am sharing the inside scoop with my peeps here first!
I hope you enjoyed this week’s newsletter. If you did, feel free to share with a friend or someone you know.
