Finding My Momentum
How a year of shifts taught me to embrace action and set a new standard for the year ahead.
Since 2016, I have always chosen a word to represent my theme for the new year. For 2024, I chose the word Shift. I expected some change, but what I didn’t expect was how it would impact every area of my life: work, creativity, and even where I call home.
From making big decisions like moving to NYC in the spring for a new job to stepping outside my comfort zone in ways I hadn’t planned, there were moments of doubt and discomfort. Could I manage a city and job that constantly demands my best and what would life look like now that I live here vs. my frequent visits? Yet, the beauty of these shifts is how they reframed how I see challenges, opportunities, and potential in everyday life. While I’d made big shifts externally, I realized I needed a creative and personal reset internally.
By September, I found myself back in Mexico City for a week, craving a creative reset. I thought I’d find clarity, but what I truly discovered was how much I’d been overthinking. After deep convos with friends and solo moments of reflection at my favorite spots, I realized I had been stuck in my head, overthinking every decision and idea this year. I was used to generating ideas for work, clients, and others, but when it was my turn I froze. Looking for the next thing to learn, reading all the advice, etc. Yet, none of that is taking action. CDMX reminded me that creativity thrives not in perfection but in exploration. Coming back to NYC, I knew it was time to stop waiting for the “perfect” moment. Instead, I chose to act.
That realization led me to host Power Hours, a focused work session where like-minded individuals come together to plug in, work on their projects, and make meaningful progress. Power Hours started during my sabbatical in Mexico City, but on the 15th I brought them to Brooklyn.
I wanted to create a space where people could work with intention, tapping into that same magic I discovered during my sabbatical in CDMX. Power Hours became my way of sharing what happens when creativity meets purpose.
Truthfully, planning my first event scared me. I didn’t know what I was doing, and the fear of failure was real. But I leaned on my community: friends who encouraged me, helped me plan and reminded me that sometimes, you just have to start.
The event wasn’t perfect, and a few things didn’t go as planned. Logistics got tricky, there were printing issues with my designs, and even technology wasn’t on my side. But as I looked around the room, watching people connect and create, I realized that imperfection doesn’t diminish impact; it’s part of the process. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, I focused on what went right. That shift reminded me that joy and growth come from embracing the journey, not chasing perfection. This moment became the embodiment of my word for 2025: Momentum.
While Shift was about realignment, Momentum is about progression. It’s about making small moves, leaps of faith, reset moments, and creative risks and building on them with consistent, intentional action.
Momentum doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you keep showing up, even when it’s hard. It happens when you celebrate progress over perfection. As I step into 2025, I ask myself: What does momentum look like for me? And how can I keep building on what’s already in motion: personally, professionally, and creatively?
Now it’s your turn to reflect. What small risks or shifts did you make this year that helped you grow? How can you carry that energy into the new year?
2024 was about finding clarity in the shift. 2025 will be about building momentum from that clarity. As I keep the manual but stay open to the magic, I’m excited to have you here for this next chapter.
